Explore feature in Google Docs and Slides
|
Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:45 PM PDT
The Explore feature in Google Docs and Slides makes it simple to search for Google Drive files related to whatever you’re currently working on. G Suite users can view images and charts in those files—right from within the Explore panel—and insert them quickly and easily into their document or presentation.

Google Sites new buttons feature...
|
Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:46 AM PDT
We’re making it easy to add buttons to the new Google Sites. These are clickable graphics which link to other content within your site or at an external URL. Users often click on buttons more frequently than they click on in-line hyperlinks, so they are a good way to guide people to important content. For example you could add a “Contact Us” button to encourage users to get in touch with you.
Buttons will automatically match the color scheme and theme of your site, and can be resized easily through the interface. This will help you:
Now that you can add buttons with just a few clicks, we hope you’ll be able to more easily create attractive sites which guide users to relevant content. Visit our Help Center to learn more about how to add, edit, or delete buttons. |

New Feature Google Drive Upload, better control of versions...
Google Apps update alerts |
|
Posted: 06 Sep 2016 07:30 AM PDT
A common use case for Google Drive users is to download a file from their Drive to modify
it locally, and then to re-upload the new version. In the past, this would result in duplicate
files (the original and the new one), and users would have trouble finding the latest version.
That’s why we’re introducing a change in Drive to deduplicate files which were uploaded
in this way.
they’ll be deduplicated, and the old file will be in revision history. This is so that if any
mistakes are made, users can get back to the previous version. Similarly, uploaded

Turn your Chomebook into a video camera with ClipChamp
Turn your Chomebook into a video camera with ClipChamp, just add it from the Google Web Store:
What's this?
Clipchamp lets you convert, compress and record video files. You can save processed videos or upload them straight to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook or Google Drive.
Clipchamp app reduces your input video's file size at no visible quality loss - smaller files upload faster and can be shared more easily. Say goodbye to never-ending uploads.
Clipchamp webcam recorder takes video in SD or HD, depending on the type of your webcam and the oomph of your CPU.

Clipchamp webcam recorder takes video in SD or HD, depending on the type of your webcam and the oomph of your CPU.
How does it work?
Clipchamp runs in your browser but your videos get processed locally on your computer. This means you don't need to install any software or slowly upload files to an online converter. Your videos stay on your computer until you decide to share them.
Clipchamp's preconfigured output settings keep things simple. Output formats are MP4, WebM, FLV (Flash video), WMV (Windows Media) & GIF. Resolution options are 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p & "same as input file."
You can access ClipChamp directly from the web at https://clipchamp.com/. If you need help installing or using this tool, let me know...

Tech Tip: Essential PC shortcuts you should know...
Repost from Windows Get Help...
I've always liked that Windows gives me multiple ways to perform popular tasks. Say you want to print something. You could go to the File menu and select the Print command, or you can press the Ctrl button and the letter P. Ctrl+P is just one example of a keyboard shortcut. Shortcuts combine two or more keys to do something special that neither key does alone.
I prefer to use shortcuts whenever possible. It’s kind of amazing how much time you can save by cutting out mouse clicks. Here are my top 20 shortcuts that you might not know about—but should.
Get to know the basics
There are certain shortcuts I use all day, every day. They work whether I’m doing stuff with photos, music, documents, or spreadsheets.
- Copy a selected item: Ctrl+C
- Cut a selected item: Ctrl+X
- Paste a selected item: Ctrl+V
- Undo an action: Ctrl+Z
- Redo that thing I just undid: Ctrl+Y
- Select everything: Ctrl+A
- Print: Ctrl+P
- Lock your PC or switch users
Windows logo key+L
This shortcut locks your PC and instantly displays the login screen. This is especially important if you will be leaving your classroom!
To see more shortcuts, go to 20 essential PC shortcuts

Word Clouds in Google Docs
Can't run Wordle or Tagxedo from the Chromebooks?
Here's an Add-on for Google docs that will let you create "word clouds."
How to access it?
When you have a Google Document open, open the Add-ons menu and search for "tag cloud generator." The Tag Cloud Generator Add-on will create a word cloud in the right-hand margin of any of your Google Documents that contain more than one hundred words.
How to use it in Education?
Maybe you've used a word cloud to introduce a new unit/lesson/concept OR to emphasise the important points in an article or story. What about students using this tool in their writing? Word clouds can help students analyze documents written by others as well as documents of their own creation. By copying the text of a document into a word cloud generator your students can quickly see the words that appear most frequently in that document. Word clouds can also be used to help students see which words that they have frequently used in their own works. Have your students create word clouds of their work during the revision process of writing a story or essay. The word cloud will quickly show students which words they have used the most. Then ask them to think about synonyms for the words that they have used most often in their writings.
Thanks to Natalie Amtmann, science teacher at the high school, for sharing this tool!
