Tech-Tips: Making Gmail your default mail application

You can designate Gmail as your default mailto handler, I've tested this at home & school, it seems to be the solution.

You can designate Gmail as your default mailto: handler. This means that when you click on any hyper-linked email address, a Gmail compose window will open so you can send a message to that address from Gmail.  To set this up, go to this link http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10966 and follow the steps provided OR open and print this PDF for easy step by step directions.
